from the page: "Tours Whether Amma is touring or is in her Spiritual Center in India, she is doing one thing most of the time - that is, receiving one and all who have assembled in her presence with a gentle, warm embrace that has been described as " Divine" by many around the globe. When someone asked Amma to describe the experience of God, Amma said that it is not possible to adequately put into words the taste of sugar to one who does not know the meaning of the word "sweet" . One has to taste sugar to understand sweetness. Similarly, God is pure experience, beyond the mind and words. Amma's devotees speak in the same way about her embrace - One of Amma's followers said, " Amma's hug is like a gentle river caressing our parched souls. In fact, it is hard to describe her embrace. It is an experience where my mind stops and feels completely relaxed and loved." It is hard to comprehend the source of Amma's inexhaustible energy that flows from moment to moment, day after day, in the form of a loving, motherly hug. Often she sits for more than 18-20 hours straight without even a moments break. Over the past 35 years Amma has hugged more than 25 million people around the globe. When asked if she ever feels tired of listening to the same problems of people, and hugging over and over again, Amma answered with a smile, " Where there is love, there is no effort." Whether one believes in Amma or not, it remains an indisputable fact that she is one of the most hard working people that this world has ever seen."

http://www.amma.org/teachings/family-life.html
From the page: "Family Life Amma says, "Children, both wordly and spiritual life can be led side by side, but we must act without attachment and expectation." We feel sorry when we think, "I have done this; I want to reap the fruit of it. If we think that everything is God's, then we have no attachment. God is the only Truth". No matter how much wealth we have, unless we properly understand its value and use, we will experience only sorrow. Even if we derive from it is only temporary. It cannot give eternal happiness. If we understand how to use wealth properly, we will enjoy the wealth of happiness and peace. A juggler does so many tricks. He dances and rolls on the ground, but as he juggles his mind is always fixed on the object. Just so, with practice you can learn to fix the mind on God while doing any work. Small children may worry that the Sun has disappeared at sunset. In the morning when it rises, they rejoice at its return. They don't know what the truth is. Likewise, we rejoice and grieve like them with gain and loss. If one's child is sick, we are willing to wait without sleep for any length of time in the hospital waiting room. We have time to linger for hours in a shop simply to purchase some costumes. But we have no time to pray to God. Children, when we love God, we will easily find time to pray to God. Children, you may be scientist or doctor or engineer, let the rational aspect of yourself shine forth when you are in the laboratory and when you are among other professionals. But when you go home you should be able to drop the role. At home you are coming back to real life, and you should be able to move from your head into your heart. You should have the strength to stop thinking about your science and experiments. How boring and dry life would be if you went directly to your room without even glancing or smiling at your wife and children. Think of the stress and strain this would create in the family. If the head of the family doesnâ€t interact with his wife and children, everyone will find home life boring and sad. Love creates smiling laughing faces and compassionate hearts, and is expressed in sweet and pleasant words. You can choose both head and the heart. There is no problem in this, but there should be a balance, for if you choose logic and rational thinking alone, you are in all troubles. Love will not create any trouble, fear, anger or tension."

http://www.amma.org/teachings/spiritual-practices/meditation.html
from the page: "Meditation Children, you can find the secret of bliss when you think of the nature of the Self. The waves of the mind will subside. Everything is there in you already. Amma says true meditation is a state of the mind, an experience. Those who pray to God and meditate on Him sincerely will not feel a shortage of anything that is essential. That is God's resolve. It is Amma's own experience. Constant thought directed to God is meditation, like the flow of a river. Meditation is good even for small children. Their intelligence will become clear, memory will increase and they will learn well. Dear children, when you sit for meditation, do not think that you can still your mind immediately. At first, you should relax all parts of your body. Loosen your clothes if they are too tight. Make sure that the spine is erect. Then close your eyes and concentrate your mind on your breath. You should be aware of your inhalation and exhalation. We should become aware of the process. Then the mind will be wakeful. As you sit like that for a while, your mind will become calm. You can continue the meditation by focusing attention on your breath. Or you can start meditation on the form of your beloved deity. Worship becomes easy when we assign a specific form to Brahman (Absolute Reality), Manasa Puja (mental worship). Children, you should do mental worship, crying out, 'Mother, 'Mother!' with love, devotion and intense yearning. Imagine holding the Divine Mother's hand and bathing her by pouring water over her. Picture the water falling on all parts of her body and running down. All the while, call out to her, 'Mother, Mother!' and visualize her form. Imagine doing abhisheka (ceremonial bath), with milk, honey ghee, sandal paste and rose water, one after the other. When these substances flow down her body, visualize each part of her form, from head to foot. Talk to her and pray to her. After bathing her thus, dry her body with a cloth. Drape a sari around her. Adorn her with ornaments. Put a vermilion mark on her forehead. Once you clearly see the form of your Beloved Deity, just concentrate on it. Without concentration, there is not benefit. Amma stresses that you need to have the conviction that there is nothing greater than remembering God. Then you will find the time even in the midst of all your work to do meditation. As soon as you get up, meditate for ten minutes. After your bath, meditate again for half an hour. In the beginning, it is enough to meditate for a short time. After that, you can do your chores. Any work you do with japa and constant remembrance of God is also meditation."

From the page: "Spiritual Practices Excerpted from the book, " Racing along the razor's edge" by Swami Ramakrishnananda, one of Amma's senior disciples. Life for many people, is a constant struggle to find solutions to innumerable problems that cause suffering. According to the Indian scriptures, ignorance about one's own Self is the cause of all sorrows. We are the Supreme Consciousness, but we take ourselves to be a complex of the body, mind and intellect. In truth, whatever happens to the body, mind and intellect, the eternal Consciousness which enlivens it is not at all affected. We often, focus on meeting the needs of this complex because of our mistaken identification with the body and mind. This identification creates a lot of desires in us. We could not possibly fulfill all our desires, but this longing is ever present. These unmet desires often cause sorrow. It must be pointed out that all the happiness we get from external objects is nothing more than borrowed happiness. The purpose of the different spiritual practices that are recommended by great Masters like Amma is to find out how to derive happiness from our own Self rather than from impermanent external objects. Many people are very busy, but they somehow find an hour or two to walk or do some exercise everyday on the advice of their doctor. They know that if they don't, they will have serious health problems. However busy one may be, he or she will not neglect their exercise. Likewise, meditation should become an important part of our lives. Amma always says that meditation, japa ( repetition of a mantra or God's name) and other spiritual practices are as valuable as gold. These spiritual practices give us spiritual growth as well as material prosperity. They also help us to maintain our mental and emotional health. Therefore, the time we spend in meditation and other spiritual practices will never be a waste."

Thank You Amma! from the page: "Why Spirituality? Amma says, "The real purpose of life is to experience what is beyond this physical existence. However, each one looks at life differently. Most human beings see life as a constant struggle for survival. Such people believe in the theory, "The fittest will survive". They are satisfied with the normal way of living- for example, getting a house, a job, a car, a wife, a husband, children and enough money to live. Yes, these are important things, and we need to focus on our day-to-day lives and to take care of our responsibilities and obligations, small and big. But there is more to life, a higher purpose, which is to know and realize who we are. By knowing who we are, we gain everything. A feeling of complete fullness, with absolutely nothing else to gain in life. That realization makes life perfect. Regardless of all we have accumulated or are striving to acquire, for most people life still feels incomplete - like the letter "C". This gap, or lack, will always be there. Only spiritual knowledge and realization of Self can fill the gap and unite the two ends, which will make it like the letter, "O". The knowledge of "That" alone will help us feel well-grounded in the real center of life. Spirituality is not blind faith; it is the ideal that eliminates darkness. It is the principle that teaches us to face any adverse circumstance or obstacle with a smile. Spirituality is the teaching for the mind." Someone asked Amma, "Why should one follow the spiritual path?" Amma replied, "This is like the seed asking, "Why should I go beneath the soil, sprout and grow upward?" Excerpted from the book "From Amma's Heart""

From the page: "Teachings Amma's life is her message. In other words, Amma does not teach anything that she herself does not practice. Living from moment to moment in a constant state of supreme happiness, Amma warmly embraces thousands of people day after day, wiping their tears, giving them her divine guidance and offering solace to all who come to her. Amma recommends the path of selfless-service through the example of her own life. Amma says, "The beauty and charm of selfless love and service should not die away from the face of the earth. The world should know that a life of dedication is possible, that a life inspired by love and service to humanity is possible. Meditation and studying the scriptures are like two sides of a coin. The engraving on that coin is selfless service, and that is what gives it its real value. Our compassion and acts of selflessness take us to the deeper truths. Through selfless action we can eradicate the ego that conceals the Self. Detached, selfless action leads to liberation. Such action is not just work; it is karma yoga." Amma always points out that the purpose of one's life is to realize who we really are. She says, "By realizing our own Self we become full, with nothing more to gain in life. Life becomes perfect." "
